Dear Gluttons,
Crisp clean air, beautiful hues of orange, red and brown on
the trees, and those 6pm sunsets that light them up, yup fall has made its
presence known! It’s time to bring the lemonade in, pack up the grill, and put
the sun-tan lotion away. Dear old summer has left! Heartbreaking
isn’t it? Well it might be a little bit of therapy to start thinking of
Halloween treats, oven-cooked thanksgiving turkey, yams, fall fashion, and best
of all, warm pumpkin pie. Wait, what were we so sad about? Ah, yes summers departure.
Well if the idea of all those wonderful fall delights doesn’t ease your
heartache, why not get a head start to your fall adjustment therapy and visit
Coccadott’s bakery?
Featured on Food Networks Cupcake Wars this seemingly unassuming little bakery
packs some marvelous fall flavor! Interestingly situated next to Dott’s garage,
this bakery will remind you exactly why the fall is your friend. I had the
wonderful opportunity to explore their selection today on my commute back from
med school. I scanned the overwhelming and delicious variety of cupcakes (and
mind you I will have tried them all before the last leaf changes color). It was
serendipitous that sitting there, in its little corner was what I think may be
the most perfect fall cupcake I have ever tried; the Pumpkin Cheescake. Let
that soak in a bit.
The flavor combination is brilliant. Usually pumpkin based
desserts try to compensate for the subtle flavor of pumpkins by packing on the
sugar and icing. Clearly they did not get the message. Kids need extremes,
mature palettes love subtle flavor. And Coccadotts does it just right. The body
of the cupcake is an interesting and creamy mix of cake and cream cheese. Just
by sight and touch you might expect the cream to be overwhelming, since the
body is more cream than one would expect from a cupcake. But as soon as you
take that first bite, your fears melt away in creamy pumpkin goodness! The
cream cheese is delightfully, light and slightly sweet and works to actually
highlight the pumpkin flavor. The frosting is also conservatively done so that
the pumpkin element stays at the forefront of your taste buds. Perfection!
If you even remotely love pumpkins, pie or otherwise, I
strongly suggest you make your way on down to Coccadotts and have one, or
two…or even a dozen. By the time you are done licking the cream off your
fingers, fall and you will feel like lifelong friends!
Sincerely,
The
Studious Gluttons
